Is your school using coaching? I'd love to know what's going on.

We have been using coaching in our school for three years now with great results...what have you done in your school and how has it worked?Continue

Stand by your beds!

I am sure all we teachers are sleeping more easily in our beds having been freed from the tyranny of the local education authorities by the new coalition government’s Department for Education led by Michael Gove. In our spare time, we can join together with a bunch… Continue

‘We had to laugh in order not to cry.’

Last Monday, 10th May a colleague and I went to listen to Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu giving a lecture at the Sheldonian in Oxford. There was a huge waiting list for this event and we were lucky to get tickets.…

Are we missing something?

I was in a rival school the other day and I have to say I was very impressed. I was lead to believe, by people who should know better, that I would encounter unruly behaviour and a demoralised staff. What I actually encountered were very pleasant young people and very professional and helpful staff. I was there to begin some one to one support for two students.…

Welcome to my Community
My first job was teaching English at an 11 – 16 mixed comprehensive in Oxfordshire. From the outset, I knew I wanted to treat my students respectfully. As I worked, I realised the importance of a person’s self esteem.

Undertaking a Post Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies made me reflect on my practice. I had to interview my students on what they thought made an effective teacher. They confirmed that my respectful and safe learning environment made them feel secure and encouraged them to learn.

My role changed to Literacy Consultant and then to Head of Creative Arts. At last, I was able to give free reign to my creativity which was being strangled by the National Curriculum and SATS.

A new head with a command and control management style, proved to be the lowest point in my career. It prompted me to train as a coach and then study for a M.Sc. at Oxford.

What a turning point! Everything I had been aware of throughout my career began to make sense and I immediately saw the applications of a coaching mid set in a school environment at every level. I bided my time and a new head with a very different style arrived.

He listened to my coaching philosophy and recognised its potential to raise achievement and aspiration throughout the school. I am now timetabled to coach young people throughout the school. I look forward to going to work. I am much less stressed. I understand I cannot change the young people’s behaviour but I certainly can change mine and now we enjoy each other’s company.

I lead workshops and training sessions and revel in it because I am passionate about spreading the word and sharing this sense of empowerment!

Shook his hand after a service in Dubai late last year... have to agree: he is an inspiration (in fact he and his wife both are) and very likeable. He leaned over a balcony that had been decorated with fairy lights and said (to the waiting crowds…

Stand by your beds!

I am sure all we teachers are sleeping more easily in our beds having been freed from the tyranny of the local education authorities by the new coalition government’s Department for Education led by Michael Gove. In our spare time, we can join together with a bunch of like minded parents and teachers and form small schools of our own. I have been in this game a long time, thirty years and counting, and it seems like only yesterday, that under a Conservative government, we were fighting to…See More

‘We had to laugh in order not to cry.’

Last Monday, 10th May a colleague and I went to listen to Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu giving a lecture at the Sheldonian in Oxford. There was a huge waiting list for this event and we were lucky to get tickets. He was every bit as inspirational as we thought he would be. He is a tiny man in stature with quite a small voice so we had to strain a little to catch what he was saying. What struck me immediately was his enormous presence and delightful sense of humour: he laughs easily. As he got into…See More
